Why are we headed back to Wrightsville Beach, NC?
The 2017 trip was a first for us. In all previous years, we worked with one organization that housed us and provided the opportunity to work for its clients. However, we wanted to go somewhere we hadn't been before and we wanted to be in an area where Hurricane Matthew had been. While Wilmington wasn't devastated by Matthew, it did get us down into a very metropolis area.
We reached out to Wilmington Area Rebuilding Ministry, or WARM, which could provide the work, but not housing. However, it could recommend housing. WARM recommended the Matthew House. This is a beach house owned by Little Chapel on the Boardwalk Presbyterian Church of Wrightsville Beach and is specifically designed to house mission groups. It was a perfect fit.
Is it nice to be a block from the beach and to take that walk every morning to see the sunrise? Yes, it is. It reminds you of God's creation and just how beautiful it is. These moments are also very reflective and quiet. It is a great way for us to mentally be ready for the day ahead.
But one thing our group loves to do is to be in the kitchen together. Let's look back 50-60 years and where was all the activity of the house? In the kitchen. You'd come home from school, Mom would have the snack all ready and you'd tell her all about your day. That's exactly what happens on our mission trips. We come home and people want to share what happened with their day. Our supper is around a table, not in front of a TV.
So back to the question, why back to Wrightsville Beach working for WARM? Our hosts for both places are true to their southern hospitality. We loved the supervisors we worked for in WARM. They were there to teach us not only about the job but also about the people we were there to serve. When you have a good experience, you like to go back for that same thing again. Hence, we are being called to work with the people of Wilmington again this year.
Coming soon will be the beginning of this year's blog. In addition, this page will also have pictures from the trip. We won't post all the pictures here as we typically have 300-400 pictures. Just enough to give you an idea of what it was like.
Coming soon, this year's blog
